Tour of the Ukok Plateau
Description:
Ukok (alt. "Listen to Heaven"), a huge high plateau in the mountainous country of Altai, sandwiched on all sides by mountains. It is located on the border of four states - Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. This is the most remote and mysterious corner of the Altai Mountains, the mileage from Biysk is more than 800 km, and the road to the plateau is available only to off-road vehicles, through the Warm Key pass, which begins at the thermal Jumalin springs.
The main mountain range of this area - Tabyn-Bogdo-Ola (Alt. "Five Divine Mountains") with the highest point - the peak of Nairamdal (4356 m). The huge area of glaciation and the power of glaciers are well visible from the Ukok plateau.
The Ukok Plateau is a very specific place, which is not like another Altai Mountain, walking along the hills, it is easy to find cave paintings (petroglyphs) and traces of the activities of ancient people (we, for example, accidentally found a stone clearly artificially processed to obtain sharp tips).
Someone may think: “Well, what’s interesting, steppe and steppe!”, but this is not so. The colossal spaciousness and scale of the plateau is striking, around the peaks rise, many lakes with wildlife, an interesting car part and much more make the Ukok auto tour very interesting!
In 2012, the mummy of the Altai Princess was returned to the Gorno-Altai Museum, and our journey will begin with a visit to it, and then a long journey to more than 800 km to the place where this story began.
