From Grozny to Derbent. Crossroads of Civilizations
Description:
Derbent is considered to be the oldest city in Russia. Historians argue about the centuries and centuries of its foundation, but agree that it is very ancient. In Persian, Derbent is translated as “Closed Gate”.
When this city-fortress stood in the middle of the analogue of the Chinese wall. This wall was built by Persian rulers to protect the Caspian passage from the invasions of the Sarmatians, Scythians, Huns and Alans. The length of the wall was 8 km and it descended from the fortress to the sea, blocking the entire passage.
This city has experienced periods of prosperity, decline, conquest and ruin. In fact, it stood at the crossroads of civilizations and connected the south with the north and the east with the west. We will have the opportunity to walk through the narrow streets of the old city and plunge into the mysterious world of the East.
Inspection of majestic buildings of the ancient world leaves vivid impressions that contribute to a more meaningful acquaintance with the local cuisine. The local cuisine is full of Persian motifs and Turkish influence, giving it a special charm and taste.
Going down to the sea, we will be able to enjoy the salty sea air of the Caspian Sea to plunge into the coastal waters. Derbent does not shine with the charm of major historical centers, but it has its charm of a provincial city with its slowness and stature.
