Khubsugul - Baikal's younger brother

Description:

Khubsugul is the younger brother of Baikal. The largest and most beautiful lake in Mongolia. One of the oldest lakes in the world, while almost the most uninhabited. Only two small settlements on the whole lake, and therefore, almost pristine nature and clean high-altitude air.

The height is 1645 meters above sea level, the length is 135 kilometers, and the width is about 36.

The water here is similar to Baikal, and is also suitable for drinking in raw form.

What to do here? First of all, enjoy nature and magnificent views. To do this, you can drive in any direction along the shore of the lake by car, the landscape will always be diverse. And of course, try the national Mongolian cuisine, and if desired, alcohol. It is also possible to fish on the lake and climb the mountains.

Main attractions:

  1. Mungiin Daba Pass (1836 m). The border between Mongolia and Russia is located here. From here opens a panorama of the highest peaks of the Eastern Sayan (3000 m or more). The dramatic change in the landscape after the transition to Mongolia is very different from the Russian border area.
  2. 13 Ovoo - Shaman sanctuary "Arvan-Gurvan-obo". It is located near the somon Khankh in the northern part of the lake at Cape Khanginsky. The rocky cape slams heavily into the lake. Shamanic rituals have been held here for at least 400 years, and subsequently Buddhist prayer services.
  3. Golden sands. Sandy beach of impressive size, is not inferior to the famous Sarai beach on the island of Olkhon. The same very wide sandy shore, where you can find both sandy barchans and centuries-old larchs, with “stilted” roots emerging from the sands. Located on the east coast, 20 km from Somon Khanh. Suitable for "wild" recreation: unlike settlements here you can freely set up camp. At the same time, even in the season to meet people here will be a great success, which means you can feel complete unity with nature.
  4. Mount Munku-Sardyk (translated as Everwhite Gole). The highest point of the Eastern Sayan is 3491 meters above sea level. At the top is the border of states, but you can climb there from any side. The view of the snow-white peak opens from many places on Hubsugul and on roads in the area. It is possible to go to the top in just a day, while part of the way to the mountain is overcome by car. From Mongolia, the route is very simple and poses no danger.
  5. Mineral springs: Ikh-Kharus on the west coast - translated as "black water", these are numerous drinking springs with various healing properties, as well as dirt; Bulunai - thermal on the east coast, used for bathing.
  6. The Dolon Uula Peninsula ("Seven Mountains") The largest peninsula on the lake is located opposite Khanh, from where it is clearly visible. At the highest point there is a sacrificial altar for offerings to the spirits of the mountains.

Separately, it is worth noting the highway Khanh - Hatgal (somon in the south of the lake). The only road to “Greater Mongolia”. For a long time it was in an extremely unsatisfactory condition, somon Khanh is completely focused on Russia, and is almost not connected with the main part of Mongolia.

At the moment, it is almost always possible to travel along it, although it is still not easy. At the same time, the road is very picturesque and interesting, passes almost everywhere along the shore or overlooking the lake, beautiful uninhabited bays, estuaries and passes are found all along the way. You can feel a complete separation from civilization and the spirit of the expedition. It also allows you to make a ring route through Mongolia – get off at some other border crossing or get to Ulaanbaatar and beyond.

Departure to Hubsugul is usually from Irkutsk. It is optimal to take two or three days. But actually for one.
