Description:
The hay and forest markets, as well as the bread markets, were located on the site of the abandoned Arsenal Square. They were moved to the square in the autumn of 1848, at the same time the square changed its name and became known as Senna. Then trade began to develop, and in 1859 the trade in bread, grain, flour and other goods was transferred here.
Almost immediately, problems began with the very inconvenient location of the square: due to the humidity, the market was constantly dirty. In 1892, the Sanitary Commission declared that the area was not being cleaned at all. The most contaminated sites were littered with debris from a destroyed powder shop and covered with pebbles. So changed the appearance of the former Arsenal square. Only hay and wood-burning markets were left, surrounded by taverns, and an important place was in the center. At night, one of the busiest places in the city became quite deserted and dangerous.
