Construction of the stadium began on May 5, 2010 and was conducted for three years. The facility was commissioned in May 2013, becoming the first stadium built in Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On July 6 and 17, 2013, the opening and closing ceremonies of the XXVII World Summer Universiade in Kazan were held at the stadium. In addition, the stadium hosted the 2015 FINA World Aquatics Championship, the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches.
