Sviyazhsk Island Town

Sviyazhsk is an open-air museum-reserve in Zelenodolsky district of Tatarstan, on a fabulous island at the confluence of the Sviyagi River into the Volga. It is famous for its history, the spirit of Orthodox culture, the beauty of the natural and urban landscape. Accompanied by our guide, you will get acquainted with the architectural monuments of the city island, plunge into the charming atmosphere of a county town with an amazing history, legends, characters and beautiful landscapes, visit the historical reconstruction complex, where for a symbolic 150 rubles you will be taught to shoot from a bow or crossbow, you will go to the Horseyard, where you can ride a horse, mint a name horseshoe or a coin in the forge, buy honey, bread or fish caught by local fishermen.

The unique fate of the island-city of Sviyazhsk, located on a natural remnant, dominating in height between the Volga River and the Sviyaga River, among the bizarre mosaic of bays, tributaries and islands.

It has preserved many monuments of ancient Russian architecture, Orthodox culture and history. The state protection consists of 37 objects of cultural heritage, of which 19 are of federal significance, 18 are of republican significance.

You will come into contact with the amazing fate of the island-city, which, like any of us, has experienced many beautiful moments and strong shocks.

You will see the wooden temple of the Holy Trinity. It is the same age as the island-city, which is 468 years since its foundation. This was an unprecedented example of a one-time laying and settlement of a fortress city in the world: it was delivered in four weeks from previously prepared logs brought along the Volga.

Visiting Sviyazhsk, you will forever carry in your heart pictures of wonderful islands, the water surface of the rivers Sviyaga, Shchuka, Volga and the vast space, air, smells of grass that make us happy.

You will see on the way to the island:

• The Church of All Religions is a creative workshop of the artist Ildar Khanov 1994-2013, located in the Kirov district of Kazan on the road to Sviyazhsk on the beautiful bank of the Volga River.

• Children’s railway, which has been operating in Kazan for 12 years and is located in the village of railway workers – Yudino. Its length is 4.5 km of narrow-gauge railway track, equipped with modern equipment used on the railway network - security devices, traffic lights, centralization and auto-blocking systems, communications.

• Innopolis is a new city in Russia, a satellite city of Kazan. Its economy is based on high-tech industries. Innopolis has created a unique urban environment with modern residential infrastructure, ecology, safe environment, wide opportunities for education and professional development.
