House-Museum of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin

Kirov region, Kirov, Lenin Street, 93

About the company:

October 25, 1968 in Kirov in the house where during the exile lived M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, opened a literary museum on a voluntary basis. Since 1971, the museum is a department of the Kirov Regional Museum of Local History.

The main idea of the authors of the exposition is to show the influence of impressions received during the years of stay in the provincial Vyatka on the personality and work of the writer.

The central place in the exposition is occupied by Hall No. 1, which recreates the atmosphere typical of the office of a provincial official in the middle of the XIX century. Here are authentic objects of that time from the former provincial board, under which M. Saltykov served, as well as exhibits from the archives of Vyatka acquaintances of the writer: rare editions of books, magazines, newspapers, photographs, copies of archival documents.

In the second hall, the living room is recreated: the corresponding furniture (folding pawn table, chairs, banquet), interior items typical of the urban environment of that time, as well as a French cabinet piano of the 30-50s of the XIX century are exhibited.

The interior of the third hall conveys the business style of the office in the apartment of the Vyatka official of the middle of the XIX century. The room is decorated with an old German wall clock.

The museum building, which is a monument of history and culture of federal significance, is located on a spacious estate in the heart of the city, at the intersection of the main tourist routes.
