Kolomna

Kolomna monasteries are points of earthly beauty.

Description:

Kolomna is a city of churches and monasteries, an outstanding spiritual center.

I offer to take a tour with me to two ancient suburban monasteries. They are male, we look into them... and realize that everything is “back to normal”. Kolomna monasteries, the focus of spirituality and “theology” in stone, continue their monastic work. On our trip we will meet with Bobrenev and Staro-Golutvin monasteries. Given their ancient origins in the 14th century, it is assumed that they did not originally perform only religious functions. They were outposts on the outskirts of Kolomna, and were located in strategically important places.

Bobrenev Monastery is a place of prayer for the soldiers who fell in the battle of Kulikovsky. The monastery is located on the left bank of the Moscow River, opposite the Kolomna Kremlin. Kolomna itself stands on three rivers, and has always been famous for floodplain meadows. The main one was the Holy Meadow of the Mother of God-Christmas Bobrenev Monastery. The holy meadow was famous for its fragrant, honey-bearing and healing herbs, called the Mother of God by the people. Since ancient times, the monks of the Bobrenev monastery are known as good healers, they collected healing herbs in the monastery meadow, and until 1917 they healed the sick. From the high monastic site we will admire the absolutely flat Moscow meadow and the panorama of the Kolomna Kremlin, admire the bold plans of the founders of the monastery.

The most revered shrine in this monastery is the Fedorovsk Icon of the Mother of God (18th century). The origin of the icon is shrouded in many legends, but the fact remains that its existence is accompanied by miracles and healing, it is miraculous. Prayer before her comforts in sorrow, helps strengthen the family and relieves infertility. After getting acquainted with the history of the monastery, its architecture, legends and “daily day”, we will take a course to Staro-Golutvin Monastery, located at the other end of the city, 7 km from it.

Staro Golutvin Monastery, like Bobrenev, stands in a strategically important place, at the confluence of the Moscow River and the Oka. It will meet us not only with golden domes, but also with an unusual fence with high Gothic towers erected by the famous architect Matvey Kazakov. When the architect was asked why he erected his highest creation not in the center of Kolomna, but on the outskirts, he replied that he wanted to emphasize the space that he felt and saw on this place. As you can see, everywhere, for the creators of the chronicle in stone, the surrounding landscape is important! But this monastery from time immemorial attracted primarily by the authority of the founder of the monastery - Sergius of Radonezh. It is known that the “Igumen of the Russian Land” founded many monasteries in Russia, among these shrines is our Golutvin monastery. The name of St. Sergius entered the Kolomna tradition, became part of our oral chronicle, it is related to us by a special heart memory. The monastery enjoys the attention of pilgrims, it has been operating the Kolomna Theological Seminary since 1996. The terrible persecutions of Soviet times caused innumerable wounds to Orthodox Kolomna. Almost all temples and monasteries were closed and desecrated, a spiritual desert was formed. But today we see that prayer has not faded away either in the holy city of Russia or in its monasteries. Everything is “back to normal”, monastic work lives, monasteries are still points of spirituality, points of earthly beauty!!!

On the route, in addition to the monasteries, we will visit two more architecturally expressive temples: Conception of John the Forerunner in the Gorodischi (this is the most ancient temple of the Moscow region (at the beginning of the 14th century)) and the Trinity Church in the ancient village of Shchurovo (the only Byzantine-style temple in the area (1900).
