Church of John the Warrior on Yakimanka
Description:
The Church of St. John the Warrior on Yakimanka Street was built in the early 18th century by architect Ivan Zarudny.
The modern church appeared on the orders of Peter the Great. The lowland area near the temple has always been flooded in the spring. The emperor inspected the temple of St. John and noted the damage caused by the flood. He ordered it to be restored to the top of the hill. The new temple was dedicated to the Battle of Poltava.
The cathedral has survived to this day without major changes. The Church of St. John the Warrior never closed after the Revolution. In the 1930s, famous icons and holy relics from other citadels destroyed by the Soviet regime were brought here. Some of the sacred objects are still kept in the church.
Yakimanka Street changed a lot in the 1970s. It was rebuilt in a typical high-rise style at the time. Fortunately, some of the old architecture has survived.
It is most convenient to get by metro to the station "October".
