Cast iron bridge
Description:
The cast-iron Moscow bridge is famous for the fact that now we can see its fifth version - there were several reconstructions and replacements. It connects the street. Balchug and st. Friday.
For the first time a bridge was built through the Water Canal in the late 18th century. The structure was wooden. It did not last long, and in the early 19th century it was replaced by a hanging bridge.
The second version of the bridge stood for several decades, and was replaced by cast iron, thanks to which it received its modern name. The bridge consisted of three cast-iron arches, which allowed passing ships under the bridge. When water transport passed under it, traffic on the bridge was limited.
The fourth version was built in 1889. Named after its predecessor, although the beams were cast of iron, the columns of the bridge are built of brick and covered with stone.
In the early 30s of the 19th century, the flow over the bridge was unloaded, the main transport moved to another street, so for a long time the bridge was not reconstructed. At that time there was even a tram on the bridge, but 3 years before the next reconstruction, the tram line was moved.
Modern cast iron Moscow bridge was built in 1966 on the basis of the old. The supports, like its name, were preserved, the foundations were strengthened by the fact that the architects replaced brickwork with concrete. The bridge is now 17.6 meters wide. The railings on the modern bridge were cast by the fourth of its reconstruction.
