Description:
The Moscow Don Monastery was founded in 1591 as the abode of the Don Icon of the Mother of God.

It is said that the Tatar Khan retreated without a fight after the icon showered him with burning arrows in his sleep.
Most of the monastery was built between 1684 and 1733 under Regent Sophia and Peter the Great.
The Church of the Virgin of Tikhvin above the northern gate is the last example of Baroque.

The monastery became a cemetery for the nobility, it is dotted with tombs and chapels.
