St. Nicholas Church and belfry

181500, Pskov region, Pechora, str. International, No. 5

Description:

Passing the main gate of the Holy Dormition Pskov-Pechersk Monastery, you will see an amazing, preserved Pskov monument to architecture of the XVI century. The whole complex, which includes the Nikolskaya Tower, the Church of Nikola Ratny, the belfry of two spans and the gate of the monastery, once acting as the main ones.

Abbot Cornelius proposed to build a church over the Holy Gate, as well as to make an altar, his ideas were implemented in 1564-65 by Peter Zabolotny, an architect. It was built and electors, and streltsy from the regiments passing there, as well as Pskov. The church was built from a common limestone slab here.

For the defense of the temple, weapons were laid down under its stone porch, and inside a carved image of Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected, with a sword in his hand and a mitre on his head. Not in vain began to call this church "in the name of Nikola Ratnoy": since initially it was supposed to become a protection for the Orthodox monastery.

Inside the temple there is a painted Iconostasis, an icon of Nikola Mozhaisky carved from wood, an icon on which a monastery of the late XVII century is depicted. Employees of the Pskov Museum-Reserve recently set the date of the painting of the iconostasis of the Nikolsky temple. According to them, the iconostasis was painted by three icon painters in 1686-1688.
