Dormition Cathedral
International street, 5, Pechora, Pskov region
Description:
Initially, the cathedral was only a small cave, arranged in the slope of a sandy mountain by St. Jonah. In 1473, Father Jonah asked the priests of the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Pskov to consecrate the church, but they refused because of the unusual location of the church. Then Father Jonah turned to the Novgorod Archbishop Theophilus, who ordered the Pskov clergy to consecrate the temple. The consecration took place on the very day of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God, which gave the cathedral its name. From that moment, the history of the monastery is calculated.
In the central part of the cathedral is placed the main shrine of the monastery - the miraculous icon of the Assumption of the Mother of God (1521). And in the iconostasis, to the right of the royal gate, there is another icon “Tendering” of the XIX century. Near the deaf southern wall of the temple in a deep niche there is a cancer with the relics of the Monk Martyr Cornelius. In the main chapel behind the elevation is the royal place. This is a special place where in ancient times Tsar Ivan the Terrible prayed when he visited the Pskov-Pechersk monastery for the pilgrim.
Since the cathedral is in the mountain, it has only the front facade. The domes are arranged in the style of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra in the style of “Ukrainian Baroque”. There are only five of them – dark blue with gold stars. They are located on the ray of the roof, as if descending down to meet the worshipers. Over the years of its history, the church has changed a lot, but the interior has retained its severity and severity: it is still a low vaulted room, fortified with brickwork and separated by thirteen sand columns.
