Varvarinian Church

Pskov region, Russia

Description:

The most famous church in the city of Pskov is the temple of the Great Martyr Barbara. This is the only wooden log church, which is located in Petrovsky Posad, near the Petrovsky Gate, its age is more than three hundred years. It was built in 1618 by Elder Agafia and her sisters, then a monastery was founded here, which burned in 1651, but there is no written information about fires and sorrows associated with the temple.

It resembles the oldest rural temples of that time: built of drill logs, sheathed with tesom. Also made of wood and bell tower of the temple, which consisted of four small bells. Due to the fact that the church is very ancient, the outer walls of the temple in 1882 had to be strengthened with wooden racks, pierced through with iron bolts. Due to frequent repairs and reconstructions, the former appearance of the church was broken, the belfry, porch were lost, but, nevertheless, the uniqueness of the wooden log church is clearly visible in our time.

Today, the Varvarin Church is carefully guarded by the state, as it is a historical monument of republican significance. The temple is active: every Friday there is a prayer service for St. Barbara.
