Pereslavl-Zalessky

Goritsky monastery

Yaroslavl region, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Museum Per., 4

Description:

Goritsky Monastery was originally an ordinary Orthodox monastery. However, it was abolished simultaneously with the local Diocese, when the state took land from monasteries in 1744.

For 100 years the territory of the former monastery hosts tourists as an art and historical museum-reserve.

The roots of the Orthodox structure go back to the time of Ivan Kalita.

Unfortunately, all the archives of the monastery were lost as a result of a massive fire in 1722.

From the 16th to the 17th centuries, the monastery ceased to be the center of attention and there is no information about its activities at this time.

The monastery is very ancient and fascinates its appearance, its famous “Holy Gate”.

You can get to the monastery by car or bus, first to Yaroslavl or Moscow, and then to Pereslavl.
