Perm cathedral mosque

ooh Osinskaya, 5, Perm, Perm Krai, 614,000, Russian Federation

Description:

Perm Cathedral Mosque is the oldest building in the city for prayer meetings of Muslims and is a picturesque architectural monument. The decision to build the mosque was taken by the city authorities in 1902, and its design was engaged in a whole team, including the famous Perm architect A.I. Ozhegov. After the revolution and the separation of church and state, the mosque continued to function.

In 1940, in accordance with the decision of the city executive committee “for mismanagement”, the mosque building was seized from believers and transferred to the club of deaf mutes. However, soon this decision was canceled and the mosque was converted to the needs of the party archive, which was based there for almost half a century. In 1986, the archive moved to a new building, and the mosque housed the exposition of the local history museum. It was only in 1990 that the Muslim community managed to return the mosque building to the faithful.

The building of the mosque is built in an eclectic style, combining elements of oriental architecture and some features of Russian architecture. For example, a massive minaret with a rectangular base remotely resembles the outlines of a classical church bell tower. The windows are decorated with bright colorful stained glass. The exterior decoration is made of relief details, and a special color is achieved due to the harmonious combination of white and green colors. The interior, decorated in green colors, is quite modest, without any decorative excesses.
