Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral
prosp. Komsomolsky, 4, Perm, Perm Krai, 614,000, Russian Federation
Description:
The building of the Transfiguration Cathedral is one of the most outstanding historical buildings of Perm. Located on the banks of Kama, on the highest point of Mount Sludki, the cathedral is perfectly visible from the river and acts as a lighthouse, indicating the location of the city.
The Transfiguration Monastery was founded in 1560 by the Stroganovs in the village of Pyskor, and two decades later, the first governor of Perm decided to move the monastery to the city. The monastery buildings were dismantled and fused along the Kama, but for various reasons the transfer was delayed for 12 years - there was not enough money for construction.
In 1799, by decree of Emperor Paul I, the Perm diocese was established, and the construction of a cathedral in the name of the Savior of the Transfiguration began, which lasted until 1820. It is believed that the original project was prepared by the famous architect M.F. Kazakov or his students.
The building of the cathedral is very expressive, the facade is characterized by a careful selection of decorative elements. Many elements are made quite crudely, which implies the perception of them from great distances - the capitals of columns and pilasters, sockets and brackets. The cathedral is adjacent to the bell tower in the style of Russian classicism. The facades of the cathedral are processed in such a way that they form a single composition with a bell tower.
In 1853, the first restoration of the cathedral was carried out, and in 1901 it was once again repaired. In 1933, the cathedral was closed and it housed an art gallery. In the postwar years, the exposition of the regional museum of local lore was located in the building, and in 2008 it was transferred to the diocese.
