Perm River Station
Description:
The station was built according to the project of the famous Soviet architect-constructivist A.Z. Grinberg. Once the most important junction of navigation after the collapse of the USSR ceased to function as a river station. In 2010, the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art was opened there.
With its scale and monumental forms in the style of Stalin’s Empire, the station building declares its dominant place among the surrounding buildings. The front facade of the building from the river creates a unique memorable panorama of the Kama embankment. This structure was originally intended for a “big role”, in the Soviet years the station could serve up to 500 people a day and was the second largest after the Moscow Khimki River Station.
For almost twenty years after the reconstruction, the river station was used for trade or simply empty. Today, the Perm River Station again occupies a high status, now thanks to the Museum of Modern Art, which is the only one in Russia, not counting Moscow and St. Petersburg.
