Kidzhi
Lake Onega. 66 km from Petrozavodsk
Description:
Museum - reserve "Kizhi" - one of the largest museums of peasant culture of the Russian North. The collection of architectural monuments includes 76 buildings. Kizhi Island is located in Lake Onega, 66 km from Petrozavodsk.
The basis of the collection is the architectural ensemble of the Kizhi Pogost, erected on the island in the XVIII - XIX centuries. The main building of the Kizhsky church is the Transfiguration Church, built in 1714. The church is cut down from pine and crowned with 22 multi-large chapters covered with aspen lemech. The church has something of fabulous Russian towers, while it is organically combined with the simplicity and immediacy of peasant buildings.
In 1764, Pokrovskaya (winter church) grew up near the Transfiguration Church. The third building of the ensemble is a slender bell tower. The cathedral, church and chapel are a model of the universe. At present, the museum-reserve most fully presents the section "Russian Zaonezhye", which, in addition to churches and chapels of the XIV-XVIII centuries, includes residential and household buildings (late XIX - early XX century), forge, water and windmills (a total of 20 buildings). The oldest building is the chapel of Lazarus from the Murom Monastery (late XIV century).
The collection of the Kizhi Museum-Reserve allows to comprehensively represent the traditional culture of the peoples of Karelia. In addition to historical monuments, there are several interesting natural sites on the island: the Ozov ridge, thermokarst funnels, an ancient linden grows in the northern part of the island.
