The Fishermen Monument
Russia, Republic of Karelia, Petrozavodsk, Onega embankment
Description:
Petrozavodsk embankment on Lake Onega is a popular resting place among citizens. Along the coast there is a stone pavement, on which there is a whole gallery of sculptures. Topping the list is the monument “Fishermen”.
This composition was invented by American sculptor Rafael Consuegra, who personally participated in its assembly. Welding works were carried out at the local plant.
The sculpture is a metal construction in the form of two fishermen throwing a net into the sea, and they personify the joint work of two peoples – American and Russian.
It is impossible to visually understand which of the fishermen is Russian and which is American, since the figures are very schematic and welded from metal rods.
At first, the locals believed that in the hands of fishermen is not a fishing net, and spy antenna rotting West. Citizens call the sculpture “Prisoners of Buchenwald”.
