Abraham's Epiphany Monastery
Rostov, st. Zhelyabovskaya, 32
Description:
The Epiphany Women's Monastery in Rostov the Great is the oldest in Russia.
In the tenth century Abraham went on a pilgrimage, on the banks of the river between Moscow and Rostov he met the Apostle John, who gave blessing to the monk and a rod of reeds, Abraham smashed a pagan idol. This is where the temple was built. In 1210 the holy relics of Abraham were transferred to the monastery and declared miracles.
The monastery has three temples, the main Epiphany of the Lord was built of wood in 1080, then rebuilt in stone under Ivan the Terrible. The second temple was built in the name of the Introduction to the Church of the Mother of God. The third was created in the seventeenth century in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
Unfortunately, the temple came to us in an emergency condition. It is currently under reconstruction.
You can get to the monastery by train from Moscow to the Rostov station, then by taxi.
