Ancient Borisogleb monastery

19 km from Rostov the Great, the village of Borisoglebovsky

Description:

Borisogleb monastery in Rostov the Great is one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Russia. It was founded in 1363 by the monks Feodor and Paul, and was blessed by Sergius of Radonezh, who chose the place for the monastery. In the 17th century Saint Irinarch the Recluse lived here. According to legend, it was he who in 1612 blessed Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin for the fight against the Poles.

The monastery was not only a spiritual, but also an economic center, around which settlements were formed, rich fairs were held.

After the October Revolution, the monastery was transferred to various economic institutions and began to collapse. In 1928, a branch of the Rostov Museum of Local History was opened within its walls. The museum existed within the walls of the monastery until 2015. Currently, the monastery complex is fully owned by the Russian Orthodox Church.

The monastery is part of the Golden Ring of Russia. It is located on the road between Rostov and Uglich, in Borisoglebsky PGT.
