Today, Rostov is the district center of the Yaroslavl region, but the modern regional center Yaroslavl also owes its foundation to Rostov, since it was on the waterway from Rostov to the Volga. Later, Rostov became one of the largest centers of Orthodoxy in Russia. There the episcopal and then the metropolitan cathedra was located, several monasteries were founded. In the suburbs of Rostov, the Monk Sergius of Radonezh was born and spent his childhood. Later on this place was founded the Trinity-Sergius Varnitsky monastery. In the Borisogleb monastery, the Monk Irinarch of Rostov asceticized in the XVI century. The Monk Abraham of Rostov was the archimandrite of the Epiphany Monastery founded by him in the XI century. But the most famous in Russia is the Rostov Spaso-Yakovlevsky St. Dimitri monastery, in which today the relics of St. Abraham, as well as the famous figure of the Russian Church of the Peter’s era, St. Dimitri of Rostov, the author of many theological works, rest. Avramiyev and Dimitriev monasteries mark the extreme points of the city lying on the shores of Lake Nero - the longest body of water in central Russia. Between them, also near the coast, is the famous Rostov Kremlin, which today houses numerous expositions of the Rostov Museum-Reserve. Enclosed by powerful walls with towers, it looks really like the Kremlin – an ancient Russian princely fortress, but in the strict sense it is not, since historically it was the court of bishops – the residence of Rostov bishops and metropolitans. Especially famous is Metropolitan Iona Sysoyevich, who at one time even replaced Patriarch Nikon at the Moscow Cathedral. Under Metropolitan Iona, the monumental Assumption Cathedral was renewed, the famous belfry was built, for which 13 bells were cast, and the largest, weighing 2000 poods, received the name of the parent of the bishop “Sysoy”. Since then, Rostov is one of the most famous centers of bell ringing. During the tour, tourists often hear Rostov bells. Along with museum exhibits, the themes of which are mainly related to church art, the churches of the Rostov Kremlin are famous for their frescoes.
Acquaintance with Rostov involves making a sightseeing tour of the city, where you will come into contact with the architecture of the Rostov Posad churches, you will see the pride of Rostov residents - the First City Gymnasium, built almost 100 years ago at the expense of local entrepreneur A.L. Kekin, owner of the Rostov Linen Manufactory. The luxurious architecture and convenience of the gymnasium, perhaps, can be envied by modern authors of faceless typical school buildings. Several ancient merchant houses are preserved in the city, including the house of Kekin himself, among them there are examples of Art Nouveau style made in wood.
It is impossible not to mention the special architecture of the Savior-Yakovlevsky monastery, created from the XVII to the XIX century. Like a fabulous city on the shore of a lake, it meets a traveler approaching the city on the Moscow road. Perhaps this one image is worth it to overcome two hundred kilometers from Moscow. But the monastery is beautiful today and inside. For several years, the zeal of the abbot and the brethren from the accumulation of dilapidated and polluted buildings of the colony for juvenile criminals, arranged here under the Soviet regime, it turned into a paradise. Around flower beds, flower beds, pleasing to the eye from early spring to late autumn, in the center of the monastery - a source of healing water under a wooden shade. In the church in the name of the conception of St. Anna can worship the relics of the saints who rest here, buy inexpensive spiritual literature, put candles.
As a rule, tourists do not leave Rostov empty-handed. The famous Rostov finifix, which is traded here at every step, ceramics, church utensils - at your service. Many bring from here and products to the table - Rostov onions, cucumbers, salts, healing cereal drinks from chicory (chicory is another "business card" of the city).
