Rybinsk is a city in the Russian Federation, the district center of the Yaroslavl region, located on the banks of the Volga (currently at the entrance to the Rybinsk reservoir), 89 km from Yaroslavl. The population is 237.5 thousand people (2001). The first mention of the city dates back to 1071, when it was called Ust-Sheksna. The name "Rybinsk" is associated with the main local craft (also the city was called Rybnoye, Palace Lovetskaya Sloboda). Old Rybinsk was called the city of burlaks, which appeared in the 14th century. After the construction of the Vyshnevolotsk, Mariinsk and Tikhvin water systems in the 18-19 centuries, Rybinsk became a major trading and transshipment point. In the 19th century, the ship repair industry developed in the city, a cable-spinning factory was built. The city changed noticeably in the 20th century, when petrochemical and furniture production appeared here, machine-building enterprises were built. The appearance of the city is determined by the Volga - Rybinsk stretches along its shores for more than 20 km. One of the most ancient architectural monuments of Rybinsk is the Kazan Church (1697).
Central - Cathedral square of the city is decorated with the Transfiguration Cathedral (1834-1854) in the style of late classicism. The temple is adjoined by a multi-tiered bell tower (1798-1804), connected to the cathedral by a gallery. Not far from the Transfiguration Cathedral is the winter Sretensky Church (1868-1873). Other churches include the Resurrection Church (1808) and the St. George Church (1790). In the first of them, the architectural forms of medieval Russia are combined with elements of the classical style. St. George's Church, significantly rebuilt in 1877-1885, is distinguished by a motley exterior decor.
The central part of Rybinsk was built according to the regular plan of 1784 in the 19th century, construction continued into the 20th century. A significant influence on the architecture of the city was exerted by the outstanding Russian architect Karl Rossi, according to whose designs many public and private buildings were built. The monuments of civil architecture of Rybinsk include the Flour Dvor (mid-19th century), the Red Living Dvor (1870s), the building of the exchange (1806-1811), the building of the new exchange (1911). In Art Nouveau style, a fire tower (1912) and a railway station (1904-1905) were built. The oldest residential building - Popov House (1785) is located on the main city street Krestovaya. On Stolenaya Street there are preserved ancient stone buildings.
In the suburb of Rybinsk - the village of Sand in 1884, the merchant Nikitin founded a porcelain factory, then acquired by the partnership of M. S. Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov porcelain products can be found in many museums in Russia and abroad. 24 km from Rybinsk is the village of Alexandrovskaya desert, from the once located here monastery preserved Trinity Church (1678). In the estate Tikhvino-Nikolskoye (built in 1767 to the arrival of Catherine II by the landowner N. Tishinin), buildings have been preserved, in the design of which V. Bazhenov took part - the Church of Tikhvin Our Lady and a two-storey house in the style of early classicism.
In Rybinsk, the childhood and youthful years of the physiologist A. A. Ukhtomsky passed. Rybinsky is associated with the names of Marshal V. K. Blucher, poets A. A. Surkov and L. I. Oshanin, artist N. A. Sokolov (one of the "Kukryniks"), statesman Y. V. Andropov, film director S. I. Rostotsky (a native of Rybinsk). The city has a historical, architectural and art museum-reserve, a museum of the city of Mologa and the Molog region. This ancient city, known since 1149, was once the center of a separate principality. The mologa was flooded during the creation of the Rybinsk reservoir. There are two theaters in the city - a drama theater and a puppet theater.
