St. George's

Description:

Church in honor of the Great Martyr George the Victorious

The church is part of the architectural ensemble of the Ascension-Georgievsky parish. Here is the Georgievsky cemetery, the time of its appearance refers to the XVII century. In this cemetery are buried eminent Rybinsk merchants, clergymen of city churches, representatives of the intelligentsia, famous figures, heads of factories and the military.

The first wooden church in honor of the Great Martyr George the Victorious was built here in 1660. The construction of the stone temple began only in 1779. The temple was illuminated in 1790.

Who was the builder of the temple, today is not known, but the fact that the construction was not performed qualitatively, confirmed by the following events. In 1807-1809, cracks on the walls and vault of the church required major repairs and forced the interruption of services.

In the following years, the church waited for restructuring, or rather renewal. The temple needs to be expanded. It was impossible to build somewhere nearby – there were graves everywhere. Then an interesting decision was made. They started building a new church around the old one. The old church was inside the new one. All work was completed by 1885. The iconostasis was also updated, at the expense of Nikolai Tyumenev.

In 1930, during the Soviet period, the St. George Church was closed and eventually the affairs of the branch of the State Archives of the Yaroslavl Region were located here.

On May 16, 1991, the church premises were vacated and returned to the community. After the restoration was carried out and a new iconostasis was installed.
