How is it that such a beautiful city is flooded?
It’s simple: in Soviet times, they decided to block the Volga with a hydroelectric dam. Places are flat – a great man-made sea will be. The ancient Russian city and about 700 villages were flooded.
People had to change their place of residence. Some decided to be drowned along with their possessions: chained themselves with chains, tied to their homes. The people left, but the memory remained.
Through the efforts of the people, the Museum of Mologa was opened in 1995. It is located in the former chapel of the Afanasievsky convent. Now the museum has a state status and is a branch of the Rybinsk Museum-Reserve.
