Saint Petersburg

Leningrad Utopia. Local history walk

Description:

The sleeping areas of St. Petersburg are full of secrets and wonderful stories that go unnoticed by most citizens. It is enough to listen carefully to hear the voices of the past, telling the amazing events that took place here many years ago.

Stracek Avenue is an important vital nerve of the city, stretching far south of its center. This street is famous for its deep connection with history, because it was originally conceived by Peter the Great himself as part of the solemn Peterhof Road leading to the imperial residences. Later, country estates and noble dachas appeared along it, giving peace and inspiration to many generations of St. Petersburgers.

However, the real transformation occurred at the beginning of the XX century, when the young Soviet state decided to turn these places into a model of ideal socialist urban planning. Spacious working-class settlements appeared, each element of which was subordinated to the interests of the working population. The houses were built compactly, rationally and functionally, preserving the continuity of the traditions of pre-revolutionary development and bringing notes of avant-garde art.

I invite you to go on an exciting journey through these neighborhoods, where we can see the reflection of the great Leningrad utopia, to realize the dream of an ideal habitat inscribed in the urban landscape of St. Petersburg.
