Ligovsky Avenue. Local history walk

Ligovsky Avenue is a unique urban artery with a rich history and a special atmosphere. Originally located on the site of the ancient Novgorod Road, which preceded the foundation of St. Petersburg, the avenue has gone a long way of transformation and change.

The avenue began its existence with a simple road connecting the old and new capitals of the empire. In the era of Peter I, the Ligovsky Canal was built along it, designed to supply water to the fountains of the Summer Garden. This made the avenue the center of technical innovation of its time.

Since the second half of the XIX century, the appearance of the prospectus has changed dramatically. A railway was built along it, linking the capital with Moscow, which led to the active development of infrastructure and the construction of new buildings. The canal was hidden underground, and on the former shores appeared hotels, apartment houses, factories and warehouses.

The prospectus became especially famous in the interwar years, when the term “Ligovskaya punk” became associated with the criminal subculture of the district. However, times are changing, and today Ligovsky Prospekt appears as a renewed face of St. Petersburg, combining traditional architectural forms with the modern needs of the city.
