Rebellion Square

Russia, St. Petersburg, is located at the intersection of Nevsky and Ligovsky Prospects.

Description:

Rebellion Square is located on the only bend of Nevsky Prospect in St. Petersburg. This place is constantly crowded with transport, as here is the Moscow station. Previously, the square was called “Znamenskaya”, since there was a Znamenskaya church, and in 1940 the church was destroyed, and in its place a round spire-decorated lobby of the metro station “Vosstaniya Square” was put. So a new name appeared at the square.

The square itself was formed in the 1840s by architect N. E. Efimov in connection with the construction of the St. Petersburg-Moscow railway, a little later the construction of the Moscow railway station began on it.

May 23, 1909 in the center of the square was opened equestrian monument to Emperor Alexander III sculptor P.P. Trubetsky. In 37, the monument was dismantled and moved to the courtyard of the Russian Museum.

In 1985, for the fortieth anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, according to the project of architects V.S. Lukyanov and A.I. Alymov, a granite obelisk “To the Hero City of Leningrad” was installed in the center of the square.
