Cathedral Mosque of St. Petersburg
Description:
The Cathedral Mosque of St. Petersburg is an active Muslim mosque and a monument of Islamic architecture of the early twentieth century. The cathedral mosque is recognized as an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation and is under the auspices of the state.
The cathedral mosque was built in 1913, but the finishing work was delayed for another seven years. The mosque was built according to the project of architect Vasiliev, and the future member of the Academy of Sciences, the famous Turkologist Alexander Samoilovich participated in the design.
Before the construction of the Machakhkala Juma Mosque in 1996, the Cathedral Mosque of St. Petersburg was considered the largest in Russia. The size of the building is truly stunning - its length is more than 45 meters, and two minarets rise 48 meters above the ground. The mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 people at a time.
Today the Cathedral Mosque is one of the most unusual buildings of St. Petersburg, which stands out against the background of the architectural style of the northern capital. Although the entrance to the mosque for non-Muslims is usually closed, the interior of the mosque can be admired by booking one of the many excursions.
