Museum-monument "Savior on Blood"

About the company:
The Church of the Savior on the Blood (Arch. A. Parland) was built on the orders of Alexander III and the decision of the Synod in 1907 on the site of the tragic death of Emperor Alexander II. The temple was erected as a national museum-monument to Alexander II. The purpose of the monument determined not only its architectural and artistic solution, the uniqueness of the collections of mosaics, stone, jewelry enamels, etc., but also its subordination to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Since 1918, the building was used only as a cult object, and from 1930 to 1970 as a warehouse, which caused significant damage to the artistic and decorative decoration. In 1970, the Church of the Savior on Blood became a branch of the Museum "St. Isaac's Cathedral". In 1997, after the completion of the main restoration works, the temple, having restored the status of the museum-monument, opened its doors to visitors.
The first thing that catches the eye at the entrance to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ (Savior on blood) in St. Petersburg is an amazing mosaic carpet of its icons and ornaments, covering the entire interior space, from the basement to the main dome. This is the only Orthodox cathedral with a mosaic decoration of 7,065 square meters, one of the largest mosaic collections in Europe.
