Symbols on the monument to Vasily
On the pedestrian zone 6 and 7 of the VO line, a monument to Vasily Korchmin was erected. According to one of the city legends, Vasilievsky Island was named after him.
Vasily Korchmin was a bombardier on the island, as well as a designer-inventor. He invented the flamethrower, designed new guns, and under Tsar Peter was the main fireworksman. By the way, the first Russian New Year’s fireworks in 1700 was also the work of Vasily Korchmin!
Battery Korchmin Vasily Dmitrievich was then on the Strelka Vasilievsky Island, guarding the St. Petersburg under construction.
It is with his name that the name of the largest island of St. Petersburg is associated in the minds of most citizens. Peter I sent orders to the fortification on the western end of the island, addressed them as follows: "To Basil on the island."
Sculptors students of the Academy of Arts Lukyanov and Sergeyev created the image of a commander sitting on a cannon barrel. The view of the dashing warrior is directed forward – into the bright future of the Great Russia.
Brave bombardier, engineer, major general, associate of Emperor Peter I greets guests in a welcoming pose with a mouthpiece in hand.
The monument symbolizes the collective image of Vasily. It was installed in 2003 in the Kurdoner of the house number 34 on the 7th line of Vasilievsky Island. And interestingly, in place of the now elite house, the Baltika cinema used to stand.
. But we are interested in the symbols on the monument.
Take a closer look: on the monument you can find a mask of a lion (a symbol of power), a lizard-salamander (a symbol of fire), sea horses-hippocampuses (a symbol of the water element) and goat Pan (a symbol of fun).
