Road bridge across the Volga
Road bridge across the Volga, Volga district, Saratov city
Description:
The construction of the bridge began after World War II. The project was developed by V.N. Ivanov and V.M. Iodzevich. It was immediately approved by the Government, and engineering bridge unit No. 8 began work. The news of the construction of the longest bridge in Europe spread throughout the world. Hundreds of cameras and journalists watched the workers every day. Some even made a documentary with the formal title "Bridge is being built."
The first cars rolled on the Saratov bridge in 1965. A little later, a line of trolley buses was launched, which regularly carried passengers until 2004.
During its existence, the bridge has been reconstructed several times. Piles were strengthened and railings were repaired, which in some places plowed into the Volga.
Today, the road bridge transports thousands of people every day. It offers a beautiful view of the Volga. Many citizens, ignoring public transport, walk on it.
