The Church of the Nativity of John the Forerunner is considered gateway. It stands in the eastern part of the Kremlin above a high arch, where before the transfer of the fortress wall was the main entrance to the monastery. The date of its construction is called the end of the 17th century, the main funds for construction were allocated by the merchant Stroganov.

The church is considered a magnificent example of the so-called "Moscow Baroque". It has a very clear geometric shape and is richly decorated on the outside, it can even be called elegant. Elegantly rising above the fortress wall with a five-domed peak, this church makes the first impression of the Kremlin. And this impression is bright and joyful.

Of the medieval decoration inside the church, only a tiled oven of the 17th century has been preserved. The wall painting and carved iconostasis were restored in the 20th century and reproduce medieval analogues.
