Trinity cathedral
Holy Trinity Sergiev Lavra, 2nd Proletarskaya Street, 2a, Sergiev Posad, Moscow Region, 141300
Description:
The Trinity Cathedral of Sergiev-Posad is considered the oldest building of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, founded by St. Sergius of Radonezh. The temple was built in 1422 on the site of wooden churches built one after another in 1345, 1356 and 1412. The four-pillar cross-domed cathedral is an example of early Moscow white-stone architecture.
In the Trinity Cathedral in silver crayfish is the greatest shrine - the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh. They were moved to the Trinity Cathedral in 1426. St. Sergius of Radonezh died on September 25, 1392, and in 1452 he was listed as a saint.
Of interest is the five-tier iconostasis, most of the icons of which were written in the XV century by the icon painter Andrei Rublev and the icon painters of his circle. The ancient fresco painting of the cathedral, made by Andrei Rublev and Daniel Cherny, has not survived to this day.
On the south side of the cathedral is closely adjacent to the Nikon Church. It was built in 1548 over the coffin of the Monk Nikon of Radonezh, abbot of the monastery, disciple and successor of Sergius of Radonezh. On the south-western side of the cathedral is attached Serapionovskaya tent, built in 1783, under which Archbishop Serapion of Novgorod is buried. According to legend, earlier on this place was the cell of St. Sergius of Radonezh.
