Sergiyev Posad

Assumption Gate

Russia, Moscow region, the city of Sergiev Posad, Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra.

Description:

The Assumption Gate is the second, additional, economic entrance to the Trinity-Sergius Monastery, which is north of the Red Tower. The gate was broken in the middle of the XVII century. Their name was due to the location opposite the apse of the Assumption Cathedral. The entrance was decorated with a portico with broken cornice, which was made in 1829.

Behind the Assumption Gate, under the corps of cells that above the passage, an elegant three-tiered tower was erected, on which the fighting clock hung. Thanks to this, the tower was called the Clock Call or Clock Bell Tower.

After the clock was broken, Metropolitan Philaret gave a decree to dismantle the top of the tower, which became unnecessary. To our days, only the lower tier with a high passage arch has reached from the Clock, the facade side of which, facing the monastery, was decorated with rectangular decorative niches characteristic of the XVII century, which had "bells" inserted into them from paired bricks.
