Dormition Cathedral
Russia, Sergeyev Posad, St. Swamp 39.
Description:
One of the most beautiful churches of Russia - the Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God - is located in Sergiev Posad, being the main attraction of this city. The temple was built from 1559 to 1585 by order of John the Terrible in honor of the conquest of Kazan and Astrakhan. It repeats the layout of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, but exceeds it in size.
The amazing architecture of the Assumption Cathedral in the late Baroque style successfully blended into the Trinity Monastery Ensemble, without suppressing its other buildings. The whole cathedral was built according to a three-part scheme, having a two-tiered drum with a small headboard.
Inside the temple there are stunning frescoes and icon painting, made by Yaroslavl and Troitsk masters in 1674. Amazing elegance to the interior decoration give five-tier carved iconostasis, created in the early XVIII century, and bronze panicadil Armoury.
In the 1930s, the church was closed for believers, and a bakery was located in the building. Only in 1980 began gradual construction work on the restoration of the temple. Currently, worship services are regularly held in this beautiful church, an Orthodox youth center operates.
