Since its invention in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers, balloon design has continued to evolve. The first roast and hearth models, as well as paper and thin silk shells, are now being replaced by modern high-performance components made of heat-resistant fabric and aluminum or stainless steel.
Today, balloons typically have a volume of 2,000 to 8,500 cubic meters and can carry 1 to 12 passengers plus a pilot. The stability of the entire shell is provided by a grid of polyamide tapes, which distributes the resulting loads. Thanks to modern technologies, balloons in shape and color can satisfy almost any desire.
Passenger baskets are made exclusively by hand. The main materials here are vine, wood, aluminum and stainless steel. For larger baskets, partitions are built in to ensure maximum protection for passengers.
A burner is a balloon engine. In this case, propane gas from gas cylinders is preheated and burned. To fill these large balloons with hot air requires high burner performance. This is about 2700 kW per burner, which corresponds to about 3700 hp. Balloons are equipped with at least two independent burners. Thus, it is possible to control the burner alternately or, if necessary, both at once.
Gas reserves are stainless steel gas cylinders. Of these, propane gas is transported through special high-pressure lines to the burner. Depending on their size, gas cylinders can contain 40 to 60 liters of liquid gas. With a balloon of gas, the balloon can stay in the air for 30-60 minutes depending on the load and temperature. Naturally, there is also an altimeter and a variometer on board the balloon to read upward and downward velocities.
