Lower Oreanda Tour
Description:
“Nature has endowed it with picturesque cliffs and wonderful green forests, rich meadows and clean springs. In addition to the charm of nature, human art enriched Oreanda with luxury, diversified its decoration. In the magnificent park of Oreanda grow the rarest trees, reaching extraordinary growth; wonderful flowers fill the air with their aroma, clean streams flow among powerful rocks, stone cliffs, green bushes and marvelous flower beds, and stone benches beckon to rest among the charming nature.
The special expressiveness and originality of Oreanda is given by the combination of harsh rocks and lush greenery of the park. Occupying 42 hectares, Lower Oreand Park is a monument of landscape art.
When you look at a picturesque corner of the park with ponds surrounded by a bamboo grove, you can not believe that once there was a swamp on this place. Stackenschneider wrote in his suggestions: "Under the rock (on which the rotunda is installed) there are several keys, and from them this place turned into a swamp, why it is necessary to dig small ponds in those places with the preservation of large trees." He proposed to dig up ponds with a depth of 1.5 yards “cover the bottom with small stones, and the shores with large ones”, it was supposed to dig the soil up to 20 cubic soot.
You will see a romantic waterfall, drink mineral water from the buffet (take bottles), see the Admiral’s house, go to the Italian courtyard, climb the observation deck of the Mastovaya rock and many more surprises await you.
In the park there are no large pools-models of the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas and Swan Lake.
A distinctive feature of Oreanda is its extraordinary silence. That is why the Tsar’s Trail or another (solar path) was laid here, along which you will take a walk.
The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God was built by order of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich Romanov in 1885. It was executed in the Georgian-Byzantine style according to the project of the academician of architecture A. A. Avdeev. The temple was richly decorated with mosaic images and ornaments by the Italian mosaicist Antonio Salviati. Such famous painters and ornamentalists as Prince G. G. Gagarin, former Vice-President of the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, academicians D. I. Grimm, M. V. Vasiliev also took part in the decoration of the temple.
In the late XIX - early XX centuries. the temple was considered one of the most beautiful on the southern coast of the Crimea. In this blessed place, St. John of Kronstadt served, here she spoke and communed with Vmts. Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. Beginning with Alexander III, the entire royal family, all the Grand Dukes and Princesses came here to pray when they rested on the South Coast.
A. P. Chekhov was here. In Oreanda they sat on a bench, not far from the church. Gurov thought about how, in fact, if you think about it, everything is beautiful in this world, everything except what we think and do when we forget about the highest goals of existence, about our human dignity. These are the lines of one of the best stories by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov “The Lady with the Dog”. It is in this blessed place, disposing to philosophical reflections, that A. P. Chekhov places his heroes Anna Sergeevna and Dmitry Dmitrievich Gurov.
In 1924, the temple was closed and transferred to the Ochris (monument protection organization) to use it as an architectural monument with a unique mosaic. Subsequently, in 1928, the temple was supposed to be demolished. In the postwar period, the temple was used for mechanical workshops, construction and vegetable warehouses.
