There are many cave monasteries in Crimea. One of them is Chelter-Koba, hidden in one of the beams above Malosadov in the valley of the deep Belbek. The monastery was founded many years ago, but is still functioning today.
We go to the village of Ternovka, where we transfer to UAZ. Then there will be a small, four-hour jeep ride through the medieval monasteries of Shuldan and Chelter Marmara, as well as the cave town of Eski Kermen. Approximate time of stay at the Shuldan Monastery up to 30 minutes, at the Chelter Marmara Monastery up to 30 minutes, in the cave town of Eski Kermen - up to an hour. After a walk through the sights, we will dine in a cafe, the kitchen is eastern. If you want to enjoy the views of the Crimean foothills, and at the same time you want an easy trip - here you are.
The monastery is located in the Khor-Khor beam (from the Crimean Tatar "poor") on the slope of Cape Ai-Todor (it has nothing to do with its south-bank brother). The cave monastery of Chelter-Koba (the name translates as “cave lattice”) was built on the border of the XIV-XV centuries near the Syuren fortress, rising on top of the neighboring beam. Territorially, the monastery, named in honor of St. Fedor, was located in the principality of Theodoro, which at that time was powerful and possessed significant territories, including its possessions included Mangup-Kala, Aluston and Gorzuvita.
The cave city of Mangup, which is located on the plateau of Mount Mangup-Kale, is rightfully considered the largest and majestic medieval fortified settlement in Western Crimea. The area of the plateau is almost 90 hectares. Some call this landmark of the Crimea a fortress, others claim that Mangup is a cave, someone calls it a city. There is no need to argue here - all three statements are true. From a bird’s eye view, you can see that the plateau has an unusual shape that resembles a huge dragon’s paw.
Mangup is located directly on the plateau of Mount Baba Dag. In ancient times, the peoples of Alans and Goths settled here. In the second half of the 3rd century began to build the first fortifications. The center became the city of Doros. In the second half of the 8th century, the fortress was captured by the Khazars. It was at this time that the settlement received its name – Mangup. After 100 years, the fortification again falls into the possession of Byzantium and Mangup Kale becomes the capital of the principality of Feodoro. From this moment, its intensified development begins - new walls, citadels and temples are erected on the territory. But in the 15th century, misfortune comes again to this beautiful place. The cave city was captured by the Ottoman Turks. After 100 years, the plateau begins to leave the last inhabitants.
You will get acquainted with the secrets of those troubled times by visiting the Mangup plateau on SUVs. In addition to the fascinating story during the tour you will hear about mysterious events and unexplained phenomena that occurred on the plateau. Mangup Kale is considered by many esotericists to be the most powerful Place of Power. During the tour of Mangup you will see the citadel, the war caves of Baraban-Koba, the Karaite cemetery, the walls of the settlement, the temple in honor of Saints Constantine and Helena. In the 1990s, the Annunciation Monastery appeared in the caves of the southern cliff of the Mangup Plateau. And what a magnificent panorama of the picturesque surroundings will open before you - just breathtaking!
