Cathedral of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir

Russia, Sevastopol, Suvorov str., 3.

Description:

The Cathedral of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir in the city of Sevastopol is one of the main attractions of the city, a monument of history and architecture. This Orthodox Church is also the tomb of Russian admirals and naval officers.

The history of the cathedral began in 1825, when Admiral A.S. Greig petitioned Emperor Alexander I to erect a monument on the ruins of Chersonesos - the place where Prince Vladimir was baptized. In 1842, Admiral M.P. Lazarev appealed to the emperor with a request to build a cathedral not on the ruins of Chersonesos, but in the center of Sevastopol. The construction of the five-headed cube-shaped cross-domed church began in the summer of 1854.

The building is built of Inkerman stone, its height is 32.5 meters. On the outside, four memorial plates with the names and dates of life of the buried admirals V. A. Kornilov, P. S. Nakhimov, M. P. Lazarev, V. I. Istomin are mounted in the walls of the southern and northern facades.

The interior of the temple is unique, there are no icons on the walls, instead of them there are marble slabs with the names of 33 heroes of the First Defense, who were awarded the Order of St. George. The tomb of these admirals is located in the lower church, there were burials of 9 more admirals of the Russian fleet, but they have not survived.
