Sevastopol Railway Station
Description:
The railway station of Sevastopol was built in 1875 in connection with the arrival of the first freight train in the city. The station was repeatedly destroyed, in particular, as a result of the earthquake in the Crimea in 1927, as well as during the Great Patriotic War. In 2001, a general reconstruction of the station building was carried out.
It is noteworthy that the station was built on the site of Peresyp – the so-called place where stones were filled with swamps and hot salt lakes located in the South Bay, at its mouth.
Note that in the XIX century, Sevastopol became the main central base of the entire Black Sea Fleet, in this regard, the need to create a railway connection with the center of the country became obvious.
After the Great Patriotic War, the station was restored according to the project of the talented architect V.P. Bogoyavlensky, who made significant changes to the original appearance of the station - so, neat turrets decorated with spires and other decorative elements appeared here.
