Thunder Tower
Description:
Thunder Tower is one of the most beautiful towers of the Smolensk Kremlin, built by architect Fedor Konem. This multifaceted four-tiered tower was built in 1609. It has now been restored in its original form. The floors were completed later.
In the XIX century, the provincial archive was located in the tower, the loopholes were turned into wide windows. In 1932, a museum of socialist construction was opened here. In the middle of the XX century, the tower was used for housing in Smolensk devastated by the Second World War.
Now in the tower there is a museum dedicated to the combat history of Smolensk. Among its exhibits are old maps, a model of the Smolensk Kremlin, stands describing the defense of the city during the Russian-Polish and Russian-Lithuanian wars, medieval armor and banners.
