In 1596, the construction of the Smolensk fortress wall began, and from the first day until the completion of the construction of this unique structure, it was supervised by Boris Godunov.
It was he who laid the first stone at the base of the Thunder Tower, and according to legend, also walled up the skull of the horse of St. Mercury. It was believed that when a threat appears over the fortress wall, horse rumbling will be heard.
In fairness, a century and a half since the construction of the wall, the rust should have been spread almost continuously.
Monument to the Governor Alexander Grigorievich Lopatin, by order of which in 1874 a garden was created on the site of the former Royal Fortress, later named after him.
In the Lopatinsky Garden, the memory of the “iron mask” is alive – the deposed emperor Ioann Antonovich, Iskra and Kochubey, languishing in terrible casemates, the central entrances to which to this day are guarded by two stone lions.
Monuments, guns, the Royal Bastion, serf casemates – and here the amusement park, romantic arbors – in Smolensk, the connection of times is felt always and everywhere.

and other buildings and structures that have witnessed many important events in the life of the city.
You will visit the bottom of one of the most famous places in Smolensk - a park on Dzerzhinsky Street, which is called the Park of the Memory of Heroes.
The visiting card of the Heroes Park is the “Monument with Eagles”, which is considered the best in Russia of those dedicated to heroes of 1812. Before you come to life difficult pages of the history of Smolensk.
We will walk through the Park with a story about the events of the two Patriotic Wars (1812 and 1941-45).
We will examine the monument with eagles, the alley of heroes, commemorative tablets, a monument to the partisans of 1812, a memorial burial in the fortress wall, steles with the names of the heroes-Smolians, “Eternal Flame”, next to which the Smolian M. Egorov, who hoisted the banner of Victory over the Reichstag, is buried.
A walk through the historical center of Smolensk will take us to one of the most beautiful places of our city - the park "Blonje", in 1830, converted from a parade ground, built on the instructions of Catherine II, into a garden by order of Emperor Nicholas I.
In Blognier Park there are two favorite Smolensk monuments.
In 1885, the grand opening of the monument to composer Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, a native of the Smolensk province, took place here. The monument is surrounded by an openwork grille in the form of a musical column, on which excerpts from Glinka’s works are read.
The second monument is a bronze deer, made in 1910 at the direction of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, already as a trophy was delivered to Smolensk from the estate of Goering in Koenigsberg.
This deer was brought as a gift to Smolensk children. There is not a child who has not sat on a lion, and not a single adult who has not been photographed with a deer!
We're going down the street. Large Soviet, which called Molokhovskaya appeared in Smolensk on the direct instructions of Peter the Great, to expand the carriageway of the Old Smolensk road, which ran directly through the city.
Most of the houses are historical buildings of the XIX - early XX centuries, along the way we will see the place of the former town hall and the complex of the Trinity Monastery of the early 18th century - the oldest building on the street.
And finally, the symbol of Smolensk is the Assumption Cathedral, which survived two wars: Patriotic 1812 (by order of Napoleon in the cathedral was exhibited security) and the Great Patriotic 1941-45. He survived the period of the “war with the temples” in the 20-30s of the last century – an anti-religious museum was opened in the temple.
And now the cathedral is not only the main temple of the Smolensk diocese, but also the most famous tourist attraction of the city. At the beginning of the 18th century, it was the largest building in Russia - 80 meters high, an area of more than 2000 square meters.
The greatness of the iconostasis of the temple is striking – a 30-meter five-tier carved gilded, decorated with a large number of wooden sculptures; you will not find anything like this in other Russian lands.
In the temple there are three Orthodox shrines, the fame of which goes far beyond the boundaries of the Smolensk land: the sandals of St. Mercury (XIII century), a gold woven shroud of workshops of kn. Euphrosyne Staritskaya (1561) and, of course, the miraculous image of the Icon of the Smolensk Mother of God “Odigitria” (XVI century).
