Blonje Garden in Smolensk

Blognier Garden is one of the historical places of Smolensk. Its official opening refers to the first half of the XIX century, when a garden was laid on the site of the former parade square. However, the name of this part of the city has a longer history. At first, it may seem that the word "blonnier" is French. However, scientists managed to find out that it has Russian origin and denoted an open space, suburbs, the outskirts of the city.
The most famous garden Blognier found in 1885, when there was a monument to the great Russian composer M.I. Glinka. Then, after the end of the Great Patriotic War, a bronze statue of a deer appeared in the park, brought as a trophy from Germany. In the late 70s of the twentieth century, another innovation appeared in the park - several speakers were placed next to the Glinka monument, from which music from his works is heard.
The new history of the park is quite sad - in 2009, forged grilles were installed here, which changed the historical appearance of the park. In 2011-2012, all the old trees were cut down. Many of them were between 100 and 170 years old, and the trees were in excellent condition - not even traces of decay were seen on the saws. All these actions, unfortunately, deprived the park of its historical uniqueness.
