Holy Assumption Cathedral
Description:
The Holy Assumption Cathedral is the cathedral of the Smolensk diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is located in the central part of the city of Smolensk on the Cathedral Mountain. It was erected in memory of the heroic defense of Smolensk in 1609-1611 on the site of the cathedral of the same name of the XII century.
The height of the cathedral from the base to the cross exceeds 69 meters, the length of the facade is 52 meters, the width is 42.6 meters. According to the composition - five-headed, cubic with a three-part aspid. The decoration of the facades is designed in the style of Western Russian Baroque of the XVIII century.
All the details - pilasters, a wide double strip of cornice, the original casings of the lower windows with curls of ribbons and curly endings, in the drawing of which the decorative motifs of the crowning pentagon are guessed, the stepped frame of the upper round windows - are very large and close to suppress their size, like the cathedral itself.
