Lopatinsky Garden is a unique place, a real business card of Smolensk. The park was created in 1874 by order of Governor Alexander Lopatin on the site of the former Royal Fortress. Initially, the territory of the garden was limited to ramparts, and it was to become a sample of the historical landscape - with picturesque nature and numerous historical monuments. Along the shore of the pond and next to the stairs, statues of ancient gods were installed, a monument to the defenders of Smolensk soon appeared, and the park became one of the best parks in Russia.
August 31, 1912 entered the history of Smolensk as one of the brightest events, because the city was visited by Emperor Nicholas II. The program of the anniversary celebrations on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the victory over Napoleon included a visit to the Lopatinsky Garden. The Emperor personally climbed the Royal Bastion and got acquainted with other sights. The visit of the monarch was accompanied by unprecedented celebrations, and the festive Smolensk was captured in postcards.
Nowadays, the territory of the Lopatinsky Garden has significantly expanded, and the park has become a modern commercial enterprise with many attractions, summer cafes and dance venues. The atmosphere here is completely different, but if you try very hard, you can be transported to a hundred years ago and enjoy the nobility, grace and splendor.
