The Cathedral Mountain in Smolensk is one of the main attractions and a symbol of Smolensk. It largely determines the silhouette of the city. The Cathedral Mountain is not the highest part of Smolensk, but only the side top of the hill on which the Old Town stands, but the Assumption Cathedral and other buildings located on it are visible in Smolensk from almost everywhere.
To the top of the mountain, to the entrance to the Assumption Cathedral is a staircase built in 1767. In addition to the main building of the cathedral and stairs, the architectural ensemble includes bell towers, fences and the Epiphany Cathedral, built later than the main one, but aged in the same style.
In addition to this architectural ensemble, the Church of John the Forerunner and the Bishops’ Palace are also located on the Cathedral Hill.
The Cathedral Mountain also offers a magnificent view of almost the entire central part of the city and all the sights of Smolensk.
