Smolensk

What books we read during the Night tour of Smolensk

Description:

Light, witty, action-packed and... kind! These are the detectives of Smolyansk Lyudmila Lvovna Gorelyk, appearing in the series “Artifact Detective” in the publishing house EXMO. With one of these books we acquaint on our tour with the lantern "Night poem about Smolensk".

Lyudmila Lvovna - Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Literature and Journalism of Smolensk State University. In addition to scientific books (“The Myth of Creativity in Prose and Poems by Boris Pasternak”, “Rhythm and Meaning”, etc.) publishes prose non-fiction in the magazines “Krai Smolensky”, and now detectives...

“I used to be dismissive of this genre,” Lyudmila Lvovna admits. In her youth, she very rarely read detective stories and only classics - Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Gilbert Chesterton. But a few years ago, I had a hard time in my life. Now I realize that I was experiencing depression. At first I was saved by cakes (laughs). And then one day on the train, I accidentally got my hands on a book with a detective.

This chance meeting helped to cope with sad thoughts. And then it turned out that writing detectives is even more interesting than reading! This is how Napoleon’s Russian Treasure and Goethe’s Lost Diary appeared.

On the tour, we tell and even read a little the novel “The Lost Diary of Goethe”, in which the plot revolves around the Smolensk society of Theosophists.

“One of the bright pages of journalism in Smolensk is the journal Theosophical Life,” the writer says. The first Theosophical journal in Russia in 1907 began to be published not in the capital, but in Smolensk, by the members of the theosophical circle, which was organized by V. I. Stahlberg. Other names of the magazine’s employees are also known, for example, one of the authors signed “Student Baturin”. Some of them were included in my second novel. After the magazine was banned, some traces were lost. I could not find anything in the archives of either Stahlberg or Baturin after 1909. And I was very interested in them. It was very interesting what happened to them. After all, there was a revolution, a civil war. So I decided to make up my own story.

You can get acquainted with this and other books (but without spoilers!), as well as some places in the city where their events take place, on our night excursion on October 25.
