Oh. Sovetsk

It was founded in 1288 under the name Tilsit. Name by location at the mouth of the river Tilge (right tributary of the Neman). Hydronym from the Lithuanian Tilzhti "to wet, crumple, soften" or "leak stream, make liquid, watery", which is often roughly translated as "swamp".

In 1807, the Treaty of Tilsit was signed here (the treaties between France and Russia on the one hand, and France and Prussia on the other, after the victory of Napoleon's troops in the Russo-Prussian-French War of 1806-07; with the outbreak of the Patriotic War of 1812 lost its force).

Until 1945 it was part of Germany (East Prussia), then part of Russia. It was taken on January 29, 1945 by the troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front during the Insterburg-Koenigsber operation.

In 1946 it was renamed Sovietsk.
